If you go down in the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise.While we have supposedly ‘taken back control of our borders’ through Brexit, the ownership of what we think of as quintessentially English countryside is able to be hidden overseas.There are over 95,000 properties in England registered to overseas companies, including woodland and farmland. These companies are typically registered in regimes with opaque ownership and tax rules.The top three tax havens in the world are all British Overseas Territories: British Virgin Islands; Cayman Islands;and Bermuda. Imagine if we found those registered offices somewhere in the woods...
