Self-identification of gender is a recently-won freedom which remains contentious. While acceptance of the principle is growing in some countries, those seeking to define their own identity in this way still suffer abuse and even violence in supposedly liberal societies such as the UK. It is one thing to pursue this freedom in the cosmopolitan environment of a big city, but it perhaps takes even more courage to do so in a small rural town, such as the one where Gilly lives.
